Home-Start Butser Needs You!

We are a local charity that provides desperately needed support to families in crisis and we need people with big hearts and a commitment to changing lives, to become our Community Ambassadors.

What we do

From isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability, to those simply rinding parenting a struggle, we provide the care and respite that can change lives and give children the best start in life.

Why we need you

Right now our volunteers are helping 75 families and more than 150 children but requests for help are rising and without more funding, we will have to turn them down.  This is why we need you.  As an Ambassador you will help raise awareness and funds for Home-Start Butser services so we can support all the families and children who need us.

Could it be you?

Do you or your children attend local community or school groups?  Are you a member of a church?  Do you have strong links in your surrounding community? Do you simply have a passion for helping families in need in your community?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, we would love you to consider becoming a Home-Start Butser Ambassador. By helping promote us in your communities and networks you will play a critical role in helping increase awareness of the vital work that we do, and help us raise much needed funds.

Sometimes it is the simplest things that can help

Just a few hours a week circulating leaflets or letting your friends and family know about our work can make a huge difference.  If you're feeling more ambitious, you could give talks and presentations to groups and local schools to raise awareness, approach local businesses to hold collection tins, donate raffle prizes or make us their chosen charity.  You could even arrange your own fundraising event. Whatever you choose, your time and effort will make all the difference to families at a critical time in their lives.

Support to help you get the most out of the role

We will provide you with full training and materials, and you choose the hours to suit your lifestyle. Most work will be done from home but  occasional visits to our office in Petersfield may be necessary. Travel expenses will be covered. Nicola Winter, our Scheme Manager, will fully support you, give advice, and be available to answer questions and discuss ideas with you. Home-Start Butser's areas of operation are:- Buriton, Clanfield, Colemore and Priors Dean, East Meon, Froxfield, Greatham, Horndean, Langrish, Liss, Petersfield, Rowlands Castle, Sheet, Steep and Stroud.

Our next Volunteer Preparation Course will be in the autumn - please contact the office if you are interested in joining us.

All parents know that those early years before children go off to school are vital in a child's life and at Home-Start we believe parents have the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children.  It's just that sometimes they need a bit of help.....your help.

Home-Start Butser has been recruiting and training volunteers to befriend and support families with children under five for the past 20 years.  They have a team of 60 volunteers supporting on average 80 families a year.  Some volunteers have been with the charity since it began in 1998 and others completed the Preparation Course last year.  A recent recruit, Helen, says, "I was helped by Home-Start myself and wanted to be able to help other families now that my problems are smaller.  I really hope I will be able to help a family as much as my volunteer helped me and my kids."  Susan, who has been a home visiting volunteer for 12 years said, "People laugh at me when I say that I get more from supporting families than they get from me.  But it's true.  It can be really hard work.  But it's so rewarding that I've never wanted to stop."

Nicola Winter, Scheme Manager, says, "Our volunteers can't commit to helping for the rest of their lives, so we are always looking for volunteers.  And even if people don't want to train as a home visiting volunteer, we can always do with help fundraising, on our management committee, supporting our family groups or helping out with trips or Christmas parties.  There's enough to go around!"
